Too Smart for Your Own Britches
When I was young, I had the blessing of spending a lot of time with my grandma. I used to spend all day with her driving around the city of Durham, North Carolina. Just the two of us would run errands, go to her work, and even sometimes go play putt-putt. I also happened to be a smart kid (both brain and mouth), and I used to say all sorts of things to my grandma. (She reminds me of them still.) Usually after I would say something to her, she would respond by saying, “Boy, you are too smart for your own britches.” Now, growing up in the South, I understood what that meant. It meant that I needed to watch what I was saying and to not be disrespectful. In the words of one of the greatest movies of all time, Top Gun, I was “writing checks that my body couldn’t cash.”
Do you ever find yourself too smart for your own britches? Do you ever feel like you have it all figured out? Ever rely on your own understanding and power instead of God’s?
1 Corinthians 3:18-23 is God’s Word to remind you, just as my grandma did, to not get too smart for your own britches. Meditate on today’s Scripture readings and see that God is truly the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Place your trust and understanding in Him, and give all credit and glory to God for your life and salvation.
