Day 328
Ezekiel 47:1-48:35; 1 Peter 2:11-3:7; Psalm 119:49-64; Proverbs 28:12-13
Spreading Living Water
On each day of the Feast of Tabernacles, water was drawn from the pool of Siloam, processed to the Temple as the people sang “with joy you shall draw water from salvation’s living springs” (Is. 12:2-6), and then poured down the Temple steps. On the last day, no water was poured, and on that day Jesus spoke these words to the Temple crowd: “Let the one who believes in me drink. As the Scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:37-38) And in case we didn’t understand, John explains “by this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive” (John 7:39).
This is the image in Ezekiel – the living waters of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christ’s followers. The spread of the living water might start as a small trickle but it keeps on going, even when the terrain is not favorable, and it becomes deeper and deeper. And as it spreads it brings new life, producing fruit and healing.
