Experiencing and Giving God’s Love and Grace
Today’s reading reminds us of several things that we often forget in our day to day activities. First, we are told by Peter that the end of all things is near—a gentle reminder that this life is finite, and there is something that comes after we live this life to its end. Because of this truth, we are given a call to be alert and PRAY! For most Christians, when you ask them what the essentials are to grow in faith, prayer will be on their list. Rightfully so, as this discipline is one that indeed draws us near to the Lord and brings us into alignment with His will for our life. Peter’s challenge to pray is one that reminds us that prayer keeps our minds and hearts focused on the reality of the end.
He then gives us some very practical things we are to do as Christians towards others as we wait for the end to draw near. First, we must LOVE! Loving one another is difficult. I remember in college, I was told that one of the most difficult things about any relationship was putting two sinful people together and asking them to get along and love one another. They were right; loving others can be extremely difficult at times, because we all at our root are sinful.
Peter also says to love, and not only love but to serve others as stewards of God’s grace. That is the essence of why we can love each other… because we have experienced grace greater than any of our sins. To know that we are loved beyond anything we can ever do is simply humbling and for me allows me to love in a way I am not capable of doing on my own accord.
May you experience God’s love and grace today so you in turn can show that same love and grace to those you encounter in your own life.
Lord, I need your grace today more than I did yesterday, and I’m going to need it more tomorrow than I do today. Help me to love like you have first loved me and poured out your grace freely to me.
