Day 274
Isaiah 62:6-65:25; Philippians 2:19-3:4a; Psalm 73:1-28; Proverbs 24:13-14
Humility and Passion
Every church has them: the people who do good works not out of love for Jesus, but for their own glory; people who will help with ministry but complain while doing it; and worse, those who do nothing at all. But, thankfully there are those who emulate the humility of Jesus and with great passion, who work to spread the Kingdom of God. Epaphroditus was one of those men.
Epaphroditus unselfishly cared for the people of God more than he cared for himself; devoting himself to the work of Christ so arduously that he nearly died of exhaustion. And as Paul writes, “He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me” (Philippians 2:30).
There is plenty of work to be done, not just in the church but in the world. Sometimes the work can seem overwhelming. Mother Teresa who worked with the multitudes of dying in the streets of India would grasp frightened new nuns, take their hands, and touch each finger and say, “We do this for Jesus.” As the hand became a fist she would say, “Now. You have everything you need to do your job.” And that’s all it takes.
