Day 191
1 Chronicles 9:1-10:14; Acts 27:21-44; Psalm 8:1-9; Proverbs 18:23-24
The Sovereign Lord
Today’s psalm, one of my very favorite psalms, begins and ends with this wonderful verse celebrating the majesty of God: “O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Sandwiched between these exclamations of praise is a hymn celebrating God’s glory and the God-given dignity of human beings. God has given human beings a share in His own dignity by conferring on us dominion over the rest of creation.
We see another aspect of God’s sovereignty in the reading from Acts which recounts a portion of Paul’s voyage to Malta en route to Rome as a prisoner, a dangerous winter voyage which ends in shipwreck. Paul’s visitation from the angel assures him that he and his shipmates will not perish because it is God’s sovereign will that Paul stand before the emperor in Rome.
This passage stands as a reminder to us of God’s over-arching purpose for each of our lives. Even when our present circumstances seem bleak and hopeless, we can place our confidence in this mighty God for whose glory we have chosen to live.
