The Word of God Among Us
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1
So begins this magnificent passage that reads like a hymn of praise to Jesus the Messiah, through Whom comes grace and truth.
In these verses, we learn much about this Logos, this Word, this divine self-expression of God. He, with the Holy Spirit, is eternally with God the Father. Through Him all things were created. He is Life. He is Light. He is the One to Whom John the Baptist testified. He came to the world He made, but many did not know Him or welcome Him. However, those who receive Him become His children.
“And we have seen His glory.” – John 1:14a
What an unfathomable mystery! God became incarnate––the Eternal Creator enfleshed as a human being. The Greek word translated lived or dwelt means more literally that He “tabernacled” or “pitched His tent” among us. When God’s glory descended upon the Israelite’s tabernacle in the wilderness, it signified His presence among them (Ex 40:34-35). So we look back at God’s presence with His people in the Tabernacle and Temple, we rejoice in His continuing presence as Emmanuel, and we look forward to the future fulfillment of John’s vision in Revelation 21:3-4:
“The home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them.
They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them.
And He will wipe every tear from their eyes––Death will be no more;
Mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
For the first things have passed away.”
