Hearing Is Believing
Have you ever had to get your hearing checked to see if you were hearing clearly or if you needed a hearing aid? Sometimes we need a spiritual hearing aid to help our hearing and believing.
Do you remember the Telephone Game we played as children? The first child would whisper a phrase, then it would be shared around the circle. At the end, the child reported the phrase. It often did not resemble the original words; it might have been changed or distorted.
The Samaritans heard for themselves as found in verse 41. They believed because they heard the truth—the Word of Jesus—with their ears and heart, not because of what the woman said. It did not take signs and wonders to prompt belief as found in John 5:58. It only took the Word, which is powerful and effective. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. This personal faith helped them to believe for themselves.
We cannot believe unless we hear the Words of the Savior for ourselves. The Word never returns void, and it is an effectual tool in our evangelistic tool box. So let’s preach with confidence that God speaks though His Word/Jesus to those who listen with their hearts and believe with the ears of faith. May we turn up our spiritual hearing aids to God’s voice.
